Dear Congressman:
Thank you for all the hard work you continue to do on behalf of the people of our state and the country.
I am writing today to ask you to introduce a Constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and elect the President by popular vote. Though the College served a reasonable purpose when the Founding Fathers created it, changes in culture and technology have rendered it obsolete. In the day of internet, radio and television, the Electoral College is no longer necessary, and can indeed be a hindrance to our country's democratic functioning (as happened in 2000.)
In addition, in the 2000 election, Ms. Katherine Harris was the Florida official in charge of ensuring the election was fair. Ms. Harris was also the chairperson of the Bush campaign! This was a blatant conflict of interest. The same thing happened in 2004, with Glenda Hood (Ms. Harris' successor) and with Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio. This problem needs to be addressed with federal legislation. It is simple common sense to prohibit someone from holding these two jobs at the same time. A single person cannot simultaneously make sure an election is fair while also doing everything in their power to ensure one candidate wins.
Thank you for your attention to these issues. It's imperative for our democracy that we ensure fair elections by bringing our laws into the twenty-first century.
Yours sincerely,
C. Colvin
